Colour treated hair. Looks amazing but how do you take care of it?

I love coloring my hair, I feel like it gives you a different persona or character if you may want to call that. I’ve gone from brown, blue, purple to pink, plum and red. But they are colours that I’ve wanted to try such as blond, silver and green but never got myself to doing it (Screaming coward at the top of my lungs!!!).

Of late we’ve seen the likes of Ali Kiba, Vanessa Mdee and Ben Pol color their hair and I’ve got to admit they do look dope, and I’m seeing a trend of colour is about to start!

But hold up! Before you go running to buy that colour and probably DIY on that dye, here are 5 tips on how to get it right;

Knowledge is power – Did you know that there are 5 different types of hair dyes. Permanent, Demi-permanent, Semi-permanent, temporary and alternative colours. Our recommendation is to use either semi-permanent, temporary or alternative colour. This is because the three colors involve little or no developer such as hydrogen peroxide or ammonia, and thus making the colors less damaging to hair strands. Typically, the hair colour will only survive a repeated washing, typically 4–5 shampoos or a few weeks before fading or washing out completely.

Get a professional hairdresser to colour your hair – Swinging it, will cost you. Should you decide to dye your hair, get a professional hairdresser. If done wrong, you may end up over-processing your hair causing it to be rough, fragile and therefore causing breakage.

Maintain the health of your dyed hair – Dyed hair tends to be dry and can easily break. Use gentle shampoos to minimize dryness, deep condition your hair to add moisture to your cuticles (Conditioners such as Babassu Oil & Mint Deep Conditioner is both a protein and replenishes moisture) and moisturize your hair daily (Spritz, creams and hair milk are great for daily moisturizing). So, remember, once you colour your hair, you don’t have room to slack on your hair care routine.

Maintain color – Cut down the number of times you shampoo your hair per month to maintain the dye for a longer period.

Trim hair – And as hair grows, trim your ends to maintain hair health and preventing hair damage, splits and breakage.

Having that blond, orange and green is fun but if not properly taken care of, your hair can be damaged. Right products and a proper hair regimen is vital in maintaining your colour treated kipilipili.
